House of Waters

Start the first month of the year with an evening of soaring melodies and dancing dulcimer trills, layered and lapping into each other like ocean waves, because you’re in the hands of master musicians. And BOMBYX is the perfect listening room for this broadly improvisational and uplifting music.

Lauded as the “Jimi Hendrix of Hammered Dulcimer” by NPR, Max ZT is an innovator of the instrument. Taking his roots from Irish folk music, Max has transplanted his compositional techniques to both Senegal, where he studied the Mandinko technique with the Cissoko griot family, and to India, where he received a grant to study under the santoor master Pandit Shivkumar Sharma. His fresh perspective and bold experimentalism have been the backbone to beautiful, complex, and genuine compositions, while his unorthodox playing style has been a pioneering force in revolutionizing dulcimer techniques.

When Max met Six-stringed bassist Moto Fukushima, House of Waters was born. The two musicians and their instruments in dialogue sound like two essential elements — earth and air — picking up some centuries-old conversation and swirling it around for us to hear.  Moto has performed with Joe Lovano, Mike Stern, and Dave Weckl and has a strong background in jazz improvisation, Western classical music and the African inspired music of South America.

Joining them on drums is Florence local Richie Barshay of the Klezmatics, who has notched sessions and recorded with the likes of Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, and Esperanza Spalding.
