Intuitive, fresh, expressive, visceral, earthly. Flamenco dancer and choreographer Rosario Toledo stands as a prominent figure in contemporary flamenco dance thanks to her creativity and her ability to convey the essence of what surrounds to any audience. After obtaining a degree in Spanish Dance at the Dance Conservatory of Seville (Conservatorio Superior de Danza de Sevilla), Toledo began her professional career under the guidance of her mentor Charo Cruz, with the show Por ley de vida. She also was part of Manuela Carrasco and Antonio El Pipa’s company.

She has since combined her performances in famous flamenco clubs or tablaos such as El Cordobés in Barcelona and Los Gallos in Seville with collaborations as a guest artist in shows with renowned artists, such as Javier Latorre, Javier Barón, Antonio Canales, Israel Galván, Joaquín Grilo, Miguel Poveda, Arcángel, Dorantes, and José Antonio Rodríguez, among others. She also works as a soloist in Mario Maya’s show De Cádiz a Cuba, la mar de Flamenco. This has allowed her to develop a very personal vision of flamenco dance. A dance that is deep and conceptual but, at the same time, grounded and streetwise.

Toledo, a native of Cádiz, Spain, has most recently immersed herself in the development of her own company’s projects, reaping critical and commercial success and becoming an essential dancer in the current Spanish flamenco scene.

Her productions include:

El aire de Cádiz. International premiere at the Festival Flamenco Mont Marsan (France, 2008)
Del primer paso. Street-version, internationally premiered at the Festival Flamenco Mont Marsan (France, 2008)
Pasos para dos. Co-starring singer Ana Salazar and directed by Pepe Gamboa. Premiere at the Teatro Central during the Bienal de Flamenco de Sevilla, 2008
Del primer paso. Theatrical version, nationally premiered at the Festival de Jerez 2009 and internationally premiered at the Opera House in Oslo, Norway, 2009
Hay fuego en tus ojos. Premiered at the Teatro Villamarta during the Festival de Jerez 2011
Vengo. Street show premiered at the Festival Cádiz en Danza-Movs and at the Bienal de Flamenco de Sevilla 2012
Pintoresca. Premiered at the I Encuentro de Coreografía y Danza de Jerez in July 2013 and at the Bienal de Flamenco de Sevilla 2014

In addition to this, Rosario Toledo has collaborated on other projects, such the show Aleluya Erótica, produced by TNT and premiered at the Bienal de Sevilla 2012, which was awarded the Giraldillo Prize for the festival’s Best Show.

Also in 2012, at the First Philadelphia Flamenco Festival the Philadelphia-based company Pasión y Arte Flamenco premiered Toledo’s choreography Cómplices. In 2014, she participated in the Laboratorio Coreográfico Tapas, a choreography laboratory held for a month at the II Philadelphia Flamenco Festival. At the latter, the artist established three proposals for dialogue through flamenco with three of the city’s most recognized dancers.  This allowed her to work with other styles, such as post-modern, jazz, tap, hip-hop and freestyle.

Among her acknowledgements, Toledo has been awarded: the National Prize at the Concurso de Arte Flamenco de Córdoba por Guajiras y Tarantos (1998); the second Prize of the Festival de Concurso Nacional de las Minas La Unión (1999); the Giraldillo prize to Best Show at the Bienal de Flamenco de Sevilla 2012 for Aleluya Erótica; and the 2012 Escenario de Sevilla Prize for Best Dance Performance for Aleluya Erótica.
